Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation

The Queensland Government has formally recognised Australian South Sea Islanders as a distinct cultural group and has made a commitment to address areas of need identified by the community.

The Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation is a partnership between the Queensland Government and the corporate sector to create a permanent legacy by providing university scholarships for Australian South Sea Islanders tertiary students.

Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation Board of Advice

The Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation Board of Advice provides guidance and support on scholarships to Australian South Sea Islander students at university.

Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation Scholarship Program

The Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation has available a trust fund that was established by the Queensland Government under the Queensland Community Foundation to provide scholarships to Australian South Sea Islander students to assist them with their undergraduate university studies.

Scholarships are awarded annually to the value of $5000 per year for full-time students or $2500 per year for part-time students.

The scholarship program is run through the following Queensland universities:

  • James Cook University
  • Central Queensland University
  • Queensland University of Technology
  • University of the Sunshine Coast

Australian South Sea Islander students wanting to undertake an undergraduate university course are encouraged to apply for the 2009 scholarship program. Applications close on Friday 13 February 2009.

The Queensland Government established the foundation in 2001 and has contributed $150,000 to the fund. The corporate sector and individuals are invited to make financial contributions to support the foundation.

A number of donors have made generous contributions to the foundation including Dick Smith Electronics and CSR Sugar among others.

The foundation is independently managed by The Public Trustee under the umbrella of the Queensland Community Foundation.
