Citizenship ceremony
The Australian Citizenship Ceremony at the Queensland Multicultural Festival 2009
More than 80 people became Australian citizens at the Queensland Multicultural Festival on Sunday 18 October.
Multicultural Affairs Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk officially welcomed the new Australian citizens into the Queensland community during a special citizenship ceremony, which formed part of the free festival at Roma Street Parkland.
Candidates from more than 35 countries became Australian citizens at the ceremony, including Argentina, Canada, China, Congo, Czechoslovakia, Fiji, Germany, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Montenegro, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Rhodesia, Russia, Serbia, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States of America, Vietnam and Zambia.
Professor Ross Grantham, the Dean of Law, University of Queensland gave the citizens address on behalf of all new citizens at the ceremony.
Performances during the ceremony included Zhiva Voda who sang Bulgarian music, an Indigenous Welcome to Country performed by Nunukul Yuggera group and the National Anthem performed by popular opera trio 'Pavarotti Viva!'.
