Queensland Multicultural Champion - Katie NoonanThe Queensland Multicultural Champion is an award to recognise a prominent Queenslander for their public support of multiculturalism. This award is nominated by the Queensland Government and it is hoped that the champion will draw public attention to his/her fellow awards winners and highlight the contribution to multiculturalism of ordinary Queenslanders as well as those who have achieved notable success.
As well as being a renowned artist of unique diversity, Katie is passionate in her views on human rights, especially those of women from culturally diverse backgrounds.
Katie's commitment to multiculturalism in Queensland has been demonstrated through her participation in initiatives such as the Queensland Roars Against Racism campaign and the Queensland Multicultural Festival and her support for Amnesty International and their Candle Day initiative, which raises awareness of human rights abuses world-wide.
2007 - Sigrid Thornton
Sigrid Thornton was chosen as Multicultural Champion for her dedicated support of refugees and her work as World Vision's Ambassador for HIV/AIDS Orphans.
Sigrid has been a World Vision supporter for 18 years and has travelled to projects in both African and Asian countries with World Vision.
2006 - Nick Earls
Nick Earls was chosen as champion in 2006 for his public statements in support of refugees and multiculturalism and his work with War Child Australia which is dedicated to providing effective and sustainable aid to children affected by war in order to build peace, resolve conflict and empower future generations.
2005 - Pat Rafter
Pat Rafter was chosen as Queensland's first Multicultural champion in 2005 for his demonstrated commitment to social justice and humanitarian ideals.
